As a result, feminism has developed very differently from Friedan’s original vision. This paper argues that, although the book had a key role in the struggle for gender equality, much of Friedan’s intellectual legacy, her most salient and critical explanations for the genesis of the feminine mystique, has been lost, forgotten, or misrepresented. Betty Friedan’s landmark manifesto, The Feminine Mystique, ignited the “second wave” of the women’s movement in 1963, permanently transforming the social fabric of the United States.
